Today is the fourth annual International SEL Day! SEL Day is an opportunity to collectively spread the word about the importance and impact of social-emotional learning (SEL). The initiative strives to help students gain lifelong well-being skills.
The schools within the Manchester Township School District celebrated today in many different ways. The House System at Ridgeway Elementary School was a highlight of the day! Students reported to their Houses this morning to celebrate SEL Day with fun games and activities. The purpose of the House Systems at Ridgeway Elementary School, and Manchester Township Middle School, is to build a strong sense of connection throughout the school among all students across all grade levels.
Today the Ridgeway Elementary School's House Systems met to celebrate SEL Day! In Ms. Collin's classroom, one of the Orange Houses met and played a game that focused on identifying emotions. Each student had an emoji on their back and the other students would provide clues to help the student with the emoji guess the emotion. This game enabled students to define, identify, and understand the many different emotions humans can experience and discuss how they can healthily address each emotion.
The Ridgeway School community, no matter what House color or classroom they were, also decorated shamrocks! These personalized shamrocks will line the walls of their school's cafeteria showing how each student and staff member unite together as one school.
According to SELDay.org, in 2023, over 4,000 SEL champions representing all 50 U.S. states and 87 countries made 11,000 commitments to showcase, promote, advocate, and support SEL. Advocacy efforts have resulted in SEL Day proclamations in fifteen states, a letter of support from the White House, and a bipartisan resolution for SEL Week introduced in the Senate.
