S.T.E.M students from Mrs. Simister's classes at Manchester Township Middle School (MTMS) had the opportunity to participate in the 36th Annual Clean Ocean Action Fall Summit at Island Beach State Park this month. The Student Summit expands learning beyond the classroom, providing middle school students from across New Jersey with the opportunity to experience hands-on, marine environmental education at the Jersey Shore.
MTMS students participated in activities that were specific to marine and environmental education. They enjoyed a hands-on experience learning about marine wildlife, the birds of the Jersey Shore, and even learned about the local species that reside within certain coastal habitats through fishing and seining They explored Island Beach State Park from ocean to bay, participated in field workshops and roundtables, reporting back their findings to the groups, and even monitored for water quality and marine debris. This was a full and interactive day for our students!
Thank you to Clean Ocean Action for hosting this event and to Mrs. Simister for applying so that our middle school students could have this wonderful experience!
