Students of Whiting Elementary had a fun and engaging presentation today from author Mike Dawson! A graphic novelist with multiple, wonderful books that students enjoy, he discussed with Whiting Elementary School about graphic novels and how WES students can, and should, enjoy the many that are available now to young readers.
In sharing his story as an author, and journey to becoming a graphic novelist, WES students learned about cartooning, character design, and ways to brainstorm ideas for stories of their own. The creativity and excitement by the students was evident as they enjoyed watching Mr. Dawson teach them how to cartoon and learned the basics of how to do so and the process of why.
He explained that drawing is about making a series of decisions that connect storytelling. They learned about the importance of making a habit of writing so that students could generate even more ideas through the journaling process. There were so many wonderful lessons learned by Mr. Dawson, especially the importance of enjoying cartooning and writing, having fun writing and getting their ideas down on paper, and enjoying the process along the way.
